South African coal exports surge as Asian demand recovers

South African coal exports surged to 2.3 Mt/wk, up +42% WoW and +60% YoY, benefiting from post-monsoon demand recovery and winter restocking across Asia, alongside constrained Indonesian supply.

Shipments reached their highest weekly level in several years, contributing to global coal loadings rising +14% WoW and +6% YoY to 45.9 Mt/wk. Australia and Russia also recorded gains of +28% and +26% WoW, respectively.

Meanwhile, Indonesia’s exports remained -4% YoY at 12.5 Mt/wk, constrained by production quotas, export permit uncertainty and low river levels. Domestic coal output fell -8% YoY in Jan-Aug’26.

Asian coal buyers are capitalising on softer dry bulk freight, with the Panamax 5TC index declining -6.8% WoW, making alternative coal sourcing more attractive.
