We believe that a good education is the foundation of your career.

The Shipping Course, established in 1970, offers the opportunity for you to explore the broader shipping industry, whilst gaining a detailed and comprehensive knowledge of key subjects at the same time. The lectures are delivered by practising shipping professionals who have been carefully selected for their skills and expertise.

The Shipping Course is based on three essential foundational blocks:

  • Theoretical lectures
    • Examples of lectures include shipping market overviews for dry bulk, tankers including crude oil, products, chemical and gas and container shipping. We also deliver lectures covering chartering for both dry bulk and tankers (voyage and timecharter), sale and purchase and newbuildings, forward freight agreements (FFA’s), ship operations, ship financing, regulatory lectures, future fuels and vessel design, tanker and dry bulk market outlooks and many more.

Please see the Overview for more details of the Modular Programme.

  • Practical workshops
    • Several of our lectures underpin the theory with workshops and group exercises to put the learning into practice. Workshops on newbuilding negotiations, chartering, FFA’s and future vessel design are just a few examples to be mentioned. Feedback from delegates has shown that these workshops have been especially valuable to them and increased their experiences.
  • Networking opportunities
    • With the Shipping Course being a residential course, the delegates have plenty of opportunities to get together and get to know each other and discuss their various experiences in business. We also organize several themed evening dinners, often attended by lecturers and IG brokers, which offer another chance for delegates to widen their networks and discuss the shipping industry.

It is this combination of a theoretical framework, valuable practical workshops and networking opportunities that round off the experience and makes the Shipping Course truly unique and dynamic.

The course is designed for new entrants to the shipping industry, professionals moving into the shipping industry and professionals currently working in shipping who are looking to expand their industry knowledge.

Previous attendees have included:

  • Charterers
  • Owners
  • Shipyards
  • Operators
  • Lawyers
  • Traders
  • Analysts
  • Agents
  • Finance Professionals
  • Insurers
  • Seafarers

Having run over 50 times, this is testimony to the Shipping Course’s ongoing success in delivering a high-calibre shipping education.

Overview

Overview of Modular Programme

The Shipping Course consists of five main modules, each building on and complementing the other. This structure allows delegates to gain a holistic overview of the maritime industry. The lectures in each module have been thoroughly planned so that course participants will gain a deep insight into each specific topic. In addition to lectures, workshops will enable delegates to bring theory to life and to practice and develop their newly learned skills.

Module 01: Shipping Foundations
This module lays the foundations upon which delegates will build. The sessions will provide a basic understanding of the ship and shipping as a business.

Module 02: Shipping Industries
These sessions will underpin the fundamentals of several key market segments. Lecturers will provide up-to-date market overviews and will cover areas including tanker, dry cargo, gas, container shipping and more.

Module 03: Shipping Markets
The delegates will focus on various aspects of the shipping markets such as voyage estimations, chartering negotiations, forward freight agreements, sale & purchase activities and vessel recycling. Several workshops and competitions enhance the learning process.

Module 04: Ship Management & Operations
Attention will be given to managerial and operational issues including financing, insurance and P&I cover. The delegates will also follow the voyage of a ship to gain an understanding of practical onboard operations. A series of lectures will also consider the legal framework underpinning the shipping markets.

Module 05: The Future & Environmental Challenges
The final module will explore important regulatory issues and their potential effects on future vessel design. An exploration of future trends in the new building market and a consideration of the environmental challenges facing shipping rounds off the course.

Delegates are encouraged to draw upon their own industry experience, therefore sharing and enriching each other’s experience and learning on the Shipping Course.
