China’s auto exports meet rising trade walls

China’s vehicle exports reached 1.05M units in Aug’26, +37.6% YoY, holding above 1M mark for a third month.

Despite easing -3.7% MoM, shipments remained well above their 5-year seasonal range.

Cars have become one of the clearest expressions of China’s export-led growth and it became the world’s #1 exporters in 2023. Although this expansion has supported global iron ore and coal trades, it has also led to sharpening trade frictions with competitors, including the EU.

With trade imbalances high on the agenda at the upcoming China–United States summit, China’s vehicle export engine faces mounting pressure across its largest Western markets heading into 4Q’26.
