China’s crude steel output contracting despite strong automotive sector in Jun’25

In Jun’25, China’s steel sector showed a striking divergence.

While crude steel output fell -9.2% YoY and steel rebar production dropped -6.1% YoY, both hitting 5-year lows, cold-rolled coil output rose +3.7% YoY, sustaining record seasonal highs.

This shift reflects mills pivoting towards the automotive sector, where demand remains strong: car production surged +9.6% YoY, truck output jumped +15.9%, and EV manufacturing soared +20.4% YoY in Jun’25.
