China’s relentless steel exports continue into 2025

In 2025, China’s steel exports remain strong despite a slightly slower momentum.

A line chart in IFCHOR GALBRAITHS' brand colours illustrating China's steel product exports (Mt) from 2023 to early 2025. The chart highlights steel industry trends, showing monthly export volumes, a 5-year min-max range, and a February 2025 value of 8.2 Mt. Year-on-year growth is +13.8%, while month-on-month change is -7%. The data is sourced from the National Bureau of Statistics - China.

Jan-Feb’25 exports came at a 9-year high of 17Mt (+7% YoY) as weak domestic demand and a sluggish construction sector kept pushing surplus steel abroad. Anti-dumping measures in Brazil, India, South Korea, Vietnam, and the USA have yet to curb shipments. With the NDRC proposing output cuts in 2025 (rumoured up to 50Mt), all eyes are on China’s steel export trajectory.
