Bauxite loadings continue to soar into 2025

Global bauxite shipments hit 6.5Mt last week, ending 1Q’25 at record levels.

Line chart showing weekly global bauxite loadings in Mt for 2023, 2024, and 2025, with 2025 data highlighting a strong rise. The chart uses IFCHOR GALBRAITHS brand colours and includes a 5-year minimum and maximum range. Bauxite loadings peaked at 6.5Mt in the week ending 30 March 2025, reflecting a 24% year-on-year increase.

The surge reflects strong Chinese demand and rising supply from Guinea and Australia. Guinea’s output has soared on the back of improved infrastructure and regulatory support, while China now imports nearly 70% of its bauxite needs – vital for a dynamic aluminium sector. Bauxite’s growing role in dry bulk trade shows no signs of slowing.
