IG’s newly introduced Virtual Market Analyst service provides clients with ongoing access to market interpretation, tailored exactly to their needs and supported by data and direct interaction with analysts and brokers.

The service combines:

  • Regular analysis of dry bulk and freight market developments
  • Accurate quantitative representations of freight and commodity market developments
  • Access to analysts for discussion and clarification of market developments
  • Tailored briefings and presentations

Virtual Market Analyst supports clients who require continuous market insight, but do not maintain dedicated in-house research teams. It is suitable for industrial & mining companies, trading houses, hedge and investment funds.

It enables teams exposed to dry bulk commodities and to gain an independent view and expert opinion.

A small entrepreneurial trading house dealing in fertilisers and agricultural products began expanding its freight exposure. The firm had started trading freight derivatives and occasionally taking ships on period, but had no internal market analysis capability.

The company needed a clearer view of the fundamentals driving the dry bulk market and a way to interpret signals quickly as their trading activity increased. They turned to IG’s Virtual Market Analyst service for support.

IG’s Iron Ore 360 is a detailed report and analytical service focused on the structure and development of the global iron ore market.

The report is structured to integrate multiple layers of analysis, including:

  • Mine-level production and expansion programmes, assessing the timing and scale of future supply
  • Global trade flows and shipping routes, mapping the movement of iron ore between producing regions and steelmaking centres
  • Export infrastructure and logistics, including port capacity, transport corridors and potential constraints

In addition to the base report, subscribers to higher-tier packages will receive access to periodic updates.

These updates will include revisions to underlying data and analysis, including indicators relating to:

  • Export volumes and throughput indicators
  • Port congestion at key export terminals
  • Segmentation of vessels by carrying capacity
  • Freight rate movements across key routes

Higher-tier packages also include bespoke analyst presentations, allowing clients to discuss the report’s findings, assumptions and implications in more detail with the research team.

“Iron Ore 360 distils mining projects and developments into a coherent forward-looking flow outlook,” said Laura Gomez, IG Dry Bulk Researcher and report author. “The analysis is built from detailed mine-level work, drawing on both public and proprietary sources to map production, expansion plans and supply pipelines, and linking this to port capacity and shipping flows to provide a clearer view of how supply reaches the market.”

Iron Ore 360 forms part of a broader planned suite of commodity-focused reports, with additional coverage expected later this year for major agricultural products, bauxite, petcoke and coal.

IG relocates Rio office

Following the successful expansion of our Brazilian operations, IG has relocated to a new office in Rio de Janeiro, further strengthening our long-term presence in one of the world’s most important dry bulk and commodities markets.

The move reflects the continued growth of IG’s Brazil business following the integration of the former Aries Shipping team into the wider IG network. The Rio office remains focused on dry bulk chartering and commodity trade flows across South America, working closely with IG’s global offices to support clients across key export sectors including agriculture, steel and raw materials.

Join the IG Shipping Course

There are still a few remaining places available on the popular IG Shipping residential course, 12-24 July, UK. The course covers dry bulk, tankers, gas, container and offshore shipping. Topics covered include market outlooks, chartering, S&P and newbuildings, FFAs, ship operations, financing, regulations, future fuels and vessel design.

Shipping is not a theoretical industry. You can read about chartering, freight markets or vessel operations — but true understanding only comes from working through real scenarios.
