Record coal exports from Indonesia after disruptive anti-seasonal rainfall

Indonesia’s coal loadings rebounded +17% WoW to a record 14.4Mt/wk, despite only a marginal easing in congestion for Panamax & Supramax vessels.

Chart in IFCHOR GALBRAITHS brand colours showing Indonesia coal loadings September 2025 at 14.4 Mt per week, up 17% week on week, 7% year on year, and 13% month on month. The line graph compares weekly coal shipments for 2023, 2024, and 2025, plotted against the 5-year minimum and maximum range, highlighting Indonesia’s rebound in exports despite Panamax and Supramax congestion.

At the same time, Australian coal exports surged +22% WoW to a 3-month high. This climax in shipments could soon be followed by an anti-climax in sales and freight bookings, as some Asian utilities — facing delays — may have “double bought” in Australia to safeguard inventories.
